We will be discussing our feelings about starting in year one and familiarising ourselves with our new classroom and environment. We will be drawing maps of how to get to our new classes, drawing our own pirate maps and following maps to find the buried treasure! Please ask your child who their new Teacher is and discuss any worries with them.

We will be using money to recognise coins up to 10p and learning how to count coins to buy items of amounts up to 10p. We will also be recapping positional language. Can your child count around the clock and say O’clock times?
In phonics this week we will be assessing the children’s progress from this term ready for their new groups in September. The children all work incredibly hard in their phonics lessons so we are excited to see their results. Please continue to support your child by reading at home and completing their online homework.
This week we will be making musical instruments. A letter will be going home to request that your child designs their instrument and if you can also provide the resources for them to make them in school. Please bring these in a named carrier bag.
On Monday the children will be meeting their new teachers. They will spend some time in their new classes getting to know their new Teacher.

We will be learning about the habitats of arctic and desert animals and looking at the animal habitats in our local environment. We will also learn about nocturnal and diurnal animals. What animals has your child seen in your local environment and what do they need to survive?
In maths, this week we will be learning about maps. We will be making our own maps of our journey to school. We will be using positional language to talk about our journeys. We will be designing our own treasure maps. At the end of the week we will be completing mazes and seeing how we can challenge ourselves to complete more complicated ones. Ask your child about their journey to school. Is it in a car, by foot and what do they see on the way?
We are working so hard in phonics and this being shown off in their writing and reading. An extra well done for those children who are doing their online work and practising their reading book at home. Those children who are consistently completing their online homework and reading regularly are the children who are making the best progress. Please continue to read every night at home as this gives your child the best support in helping them to move forward with their phonics.
On Friday 14th July at 9.00 am it will be Reception’s sport’s day. Please come and join us if you can.
The weather is a bit unpredictable next week. Please could you provide your child with a waterproof so they can still enjoy the outside area.
Please can your child bring a water bottle to school as it is very warm in the classrooms. Can you also apply sun cream to your child before they come to school as we are unable to apply it on them. Many brands do an 8 hour cream which means your child doesn’t need to reapply it in school. Thanks for your support.
Our topic this week is houses. We will be going on a walk around our local area to look at the different buildings and learning about their history. We will be drawing our own maps of the route we take. We will be looking at houses from different eras and putting them on a time line. We will imagine our dream houses. We will listen to the story of The 3 Little Pigs and discuss the materials that they were made of and discuss which materials make strong houses. We will then investigate which materials would make a boat that could hold marbles and not sink. Discuss with your child what your house is made of and what type of house it is.
In maths we will be making predictions about whether there are more or few objects and comparing quantities. We will then be using our maths skills of addition and subtraction to solve a variety of problems. We will be making boats out of different materials and testing to find out which one will hold the most marbles before sinking. We will also be measuring objects in the classroom using non-standard measures. Can you child investigate which objects around the home will float and sink?

On Tuesday 27th June we will be going on our walk around the local area. Please return the consent form by Tuesday morning so your child can participate. We can not take your child unless we have your permission.
Please can you check the cardigans and jumpers you chid brings home as many have gone missing and are named. Brooke Greenhill has two missing cardigans and her Mum would be grateful if they are found.
The lovely weather is set to continue so please can you provide your child with a named sunhat and a water bottle each day. There are still a few children coming to school without a water bottle . Please can you also apply sun cream to your child before they come to school as we are unable to apply it on them. Many brands do an 8 hour cream which means your child doesn’t need to reapply it in school. Thanks for your support.
Year 5, as part of a local history project, took part in a Blitz Experience Day. They learnt about the reasons why Coventry was targeted during World War 2; the impact of the Blitz and how it may have affected the people of Coventry afterwards.
Year 5 looked amazing in their outfits and even brought a brown paper bag with their 40s style snack for breaktime.
We will be learning about different types poetry such as acrostic, rhyming and performance poetry. We will listening to a variety of poems and learn poems to perform. We will also be writing our own poems. Can your child think of rhyming words and make their own poems?
We are working really hard in phonics and it has been lovely to see how the children’s phonics has helped them to do fantastic writing this week. Keep up the good work!
Don’t forget to log on to the Oxford Owl to complete the online work. Your child will receive extra dojo’s if they do their phonics homework and practise their reading book.
Please continue to read every night at home as this gives your child the best support in helping them to move forward with their phonics. The continuous practise allows your child to reinforce the learning done at school by applying what they have learned to their reading. By re-reading the same text it allows your child to build both pace and fluency which will help them become a confident fluent reader. Please also remember to do your ‘Reading wise’ activities as extra phonic practise.
This week in maths we will be exploring shape . We will be using right angles triangles and squares to make different pictures and to make other shapes. What shapes does your child know? Can they make a picture out of different shapes?
As the weather is starting to improve please can you provide your child with a named sunhat and remember to bring a water bottle each day. Please apply sun cream to your child before they come to school as we are unable to apply it on them.
On Wednesday 6th June RMT will doing a class assembly. All parents are welcome to attend.
We will be learning all about how to keep fit and healthy. What foods are healthy and healthy. The importance of exercise and the importance of sleep. Ask your child about what healthy foods they enjoy and what there favourite sport is. We will also be making fruit kebabs.
This week the children will be having phonics with their class Teachers. This is due to year 6 SATs. They will be having a speed sounds lesson and completing comprehension exercises where the children read the sentences and complete the pictures to demonstrate their understanding. They will be completing hold a sentence activities using words containing the sounds from this week, with the more able writing a more complex sentence. Continue to practise the letter sounds daily before your child reads and encourage them to use the SF, FT, RTW strategies to work out unfamiliar words. We have attached some links to home learning videos for your child to watch at home. There will be no online work this week but we will be sending a book home for your child to read.
In maths this week we will be learning how to add more. We will continue to learn how to order numbers to 20 to support this. We will be using first, then , now stories to understand the process of adding. How many are there? How many more are joining them? How many do we have now? We will be using tens frames to support our learning. We will learn what happens when different amounts are added to a group. Can you make your own first, then, now stories? Count out a group of objects (less than 10 to start) and add more to the group? How many do you have now?
This week we have lots of exciting events happening. We will continue our topic of Superheroes and learn more about the qualities real life Superheroes have. We will learn about Florence Nightingale and why she is a hero. On Thursday we will be having our own Superhero dressing up day. Can your child say what qualities make a real life superhero?
On Friday we will be learning about the Coronation of King Charles.
This week the children have worked hard in their new phonics groups. The children are all reading books or ditties in their groups now. Continue to practise the letter sounds daily before your child reads and encourage them to use the SF, FT, RTW strategies to work out unfamiliar words. The online book should be read quite fluently without the need to work out every word as they will have read this book several times in school. We have attached some links to home learning videos for your child to watch at home.
In maths this week we will be looking at objects and numbers and comparing which is more. We will learn how to compare and estimate amounts. Look at different containers around the house and compare which holds the most. We will also learn what Tangrams and how to make them. Can your child cut up different shapes and make a picture?
We will be completing our topic on Thursday by having a superhero dress up day. We are not expecting parents to buy super hero costumes. We would like the children to think of the type of superhero they would like to be and come dressed according to this quality e.g. they may dress in sparkles and what to spread happiness, or be cheerful and come dressed in yellow. Obviously children can come in dressed in a superhero costume that they already have but we do not want to cause you any extra expense.
On Friday we will be celebrating the King’s Coronation and you are welcome to come dressed up.
Please remember to contribute to our 50p fund each week if you can. This helps us purchase different resources to help enhance the curriculum and make it more exciting for your child so is very much appreciated.
On Friday 24th March, Year 4 held a Roman Day. In the morning, we learnt about the intricate mosaic designs that would have been found in the Roman times. We created our own Roman Helmet mosaics, even something this small required a lot of patience!
During the afternoon, we recalled information about the Roman Army and what made them so successful. We practised some of their defensive battle formations, using the shields we had made for homework. These included; The Rebel-Cavalry, The Orb, The Wedge and The Tortoise.
Once we had practised these, the 2 classes took it in turns to attack or be attacked…
Dear Parent/Carer National Strike Action by the NEU taking place on Wednesday 15th March & Thursday 16th March 2023. We have been advised by the City Council that NEU Teaching members are proposing to take strike action on Wednesday 1st March, as a further step in their national dispute over pay.
This is not a decision that our teachers have taken lightly. Please understand that Teachers are striking against the national educational policy and resourcing in schools and not against the children that they work so hard for every day.
To date, I can confirm that school will not be open to Nursery on Wednesday 15th & Thursday 16th March. It will also not be open to 4PP on Thursday 16th March. There are other staff members who will be striking however due to operational and health and safety implications we cannot accommodate Nursery & 4PP on the above days.
Your child’s attendance will not be affected by the strike day, as they will be coded as a Y (unable to attend due to exceptional circumstances). You will now need to make alternative childcare arrangements for your child/children on this day/s if they are in Nursery or 4PP.
If your child is entitled to free school meals, you will be able to collect a packed lunch from the main office at 12:45pm. The packed lunch will include, a sandwich (choice or tuna mayo, cheese, or ham) if you would like a packed lunch could you please make the school office aware.
I am unable to advise at this time if classes will be closed on additional dates, but I will send out more information if I hear.
The children had a great time last week learning all about Chinese New Year. They learned all about the celebration and even tasted some Chinese food. We finished the week with our own dragon dance parade using the dragon head we had made in the week and playing a range of instruments. It was great fun!
This week we are completing a PSHE topic all about our ‘Goals and Dreams’. We will be learning about goals and what this means and about setting our own goals that we would like to achieve this year. This could be something in school or at home. We will talk about things that are difficult and how we can develop strategies to help us deal with things we think are too difficult. The children will set their own goals to work on throughout the rest of the year. We will also think about how we can support others to reach their goals.
The children are working well in their phonics groups, it is lovely to see the progress being made. We are noticing that not all children are going on-line to do their reading activities. Please log on and do these activities every night. Click on Fred frog to go to your child’s reading book library once they have read the book once. You will find their past books here also, if you wish to do some extra reading practise. All children should now be bringing a reading book or ditty sheets home each week. Please go through these every day and sign the diary. Please remember to go through the sounds every night so that your child is fluent with these. We sent the sound cards home previously so you should have these at home to go through regularly. You will also find the sounds at the front of the reading books. Go through these before each read. We have added some videos below for some extra practise.
This week in Maths we are continuing to work on 6, 7 and 8. We are looking at different representations of the numbers and being able to look at an amount and know what number it is by explaining what we can see e.g. I can see a 3 and a 3, I know that makes 6. I can see a 5 and a 2, I know that makes 7. We are looking for the children to be able to subitise ( know how many there are without having to count). Try this at home with different collections of objects. Ask your child what they can see without having to count. We are also learning about pairs of numbers and combining two amounts. Again our subitising will come in handy here as we wont have to rely on counting e.g. I know 3 and 2 make 5.
Please be reminded that the children take their shoes off each week for yoga. We have some children mixing up their shoes. Please try to mark on your child’s shoe somehow so they know which ones are theirs, a lot of the boys have the same shoes and just grab the first pair they see. We want all children to go home with the correct property so please check that all items are clearly named. We have also noticed a lot of children coming to school in trainers with laces. Children should be wearing black school shoes that they can put on and take off by themselves. If they have laces then they should be able to tie these themselves.
We would like to say a big thank you to those parents who are paying into our 50p fund to help us purchase consumable resources for the children. This money allows us to do lovely activities such as food tasting, cake making and a variety of sensory activities. It is very much appreciated and we hope to plan lots more nice activities for the children.
