W/C: 18th September 2023

Welcome to our Year one blog.

We have made a lovely start to the new term. We launched our author study about Julia Donaldson, reading a wide selection of her stories. We have focused on the Gruffalo and Room on the Broom and next week we will be reading and completing tasks on the Smeds and the Smoos. The children have enjoyed listening to her stories and have brought in books from home to share with the class.

This week we will start our topic on Polar regions and we will learn about the type of animals that live there and research and record facts about the Polar regions.

We have made a great start in phonics, with all the children working hard in their new groups. Your child should have received a reading book to read and there is online homework set on Oxford Owl for your child to complete. Please encourage your child to do the reading and complete the quizes each week as this supports their learning in class and the progress that they make. The phonics teachers can also check who has completed the homework and the children will receive extra dojos for doing their homework.

This week we are continuing the children’s knowledge and understanding of number and place value via counting. The children will learn to write numbers correctly, recognise numbers as words and learn to count on from a given number.

Each child has their own Num bots account to access the Maths activities for home work. You will find the login details in the reading diaries. Please encourage your child to try the activities as again this consolidates their Maths skills.

On Tuesday 3rd October we will be going on a trip to Twycross Zoo. Please ensure you complete the permission slip and make the payment contribution.

Any queries you can contact us on our class emails.

This week our topic is Habitats. We will learn about what a habitat is and what that means for the animals. We will be comparing contrasting habitats and looking at similarities and differences. We will be learning about the habitats of arctic and desert animals and looking at the animal habitats in our local environment. We will also learn about nocturnal and diurnal animals. What animals has your child seen in your local environment and what do they need to survive?

In maths, this week we will be learning about maps. We will be making our own maps of our journey to school. We will be using positional language to talk about our journeys. We will be designing our own treasure maps. At the end of the week we will be completing mazes and seeing how we can challenge ourselves to complete more complicated ones. Ask your child about their journey to school. Is it in a car, by foot and what do they see on the way?

We are working so hard in phonics and this being shown off in their writing and reading. An extra well done for those children who are doing their online work and practising their reading book at home. Those children who are consistently completing their online homework and reading regularly are the children who are making the best progress. Please continue to read every night at home as this gives your child the best support in helping them to move forward with their phonics.

The weather is a bit unpredictable next week. Please could you provide your child with a waterproof so they can still enjoy the outside area.

Please can your child bring a water bottle to school as it is very warm in the classrooms. Can you also apply sun cream to your child before they come to school as we are unable to apply it on them. Many brands do an 8 hour cream which means your child doesn’t need to reapply it in school. Thanks for your support.

Have a great week.

Our topic this week is houses. We will be going on a walk around our local area to look at the different buildings and learning about their history. We will be drawing our own maps of the route we take. We will be looking at houses from different eras and putting them on a time line. We will imagine our dream houses. We will listen to the story of The 3 Little Pigs and discuss the materials that they were made of and discuss which materials make strong houses. We will then investigate which materials would make a boat that could hold marbles and not sink. Discuss with your child what your house is made of and what type of house it is.

In maths we will be making predictions about whether there are more or few objects and comparing quantities. We will then be using our maths skills of addition and subtraction to solve a variety of problems. We will be making boats out of different materials and testing to find out which one will hold the most marbles before sinking. We will also be measuring objects in the classroom using non-standard measures. Can you child investigate which objects around the home will float and sink?

We are working so hard in phonics and this being shown off in their writing and reading. We are working really hard in phonics and it has been lovely to see how the children’s phonics has helped them to do fantastic writing this week. Keep up the good work!

Don’t forget to log on to the Oxford Owl to complete the online work. Your child will receive extra dojo’s if they do their phonics homework and practise their reading book.

Please continue to read every night at home as this gives your child the best support in helping them to move forward with their phonics. The continuous practise allows your child to reinforce the learning done at school by applying what they have learned to their reading. By re-reading the same text it allows your child to build both pace and fluency which will help them become a confident fluent reader. Please also remember to do your ‘Reading wise’ activities as extra phonic practise.

We will be using first, then , now stories to understand the process of adding. How many are there? How many more are joining them? How many do we have now? We will be using tens frames to support our learning. We will learn what happens when different amounts are added to a group. Can you make your own first, then, now stories? Count out a group of objects (less than 10 to start) and add more to the group? How many do you have now?

Week beginning 1st May 2023

Continue to practise the letter sounds daily before your child reads and encourage them to use the SF, FT, RTW strategies to work out unfamiliar words. We will be completing our topic on Thursday by having a superhero dress up day. We are not expecting parents to buy super hero costumes. We would like the children to think of the type of superhero they would like to be and come dressed according to this quality e.g. they may dress in sparkles and what to spread happiness, or be cheerful and come dressed in yellow. Obviously children can come in dressed in a superhero costume that they already have but we do not want to cause you any extra expense.

On Friday we will be celebrating the King’s Coronation and you are welcome to come dressed up.

Please remember to contribute to our 50p fund each week if you can. This helps us purchase different resources to help enhance the curriculum and make it more exciting for your child so is very much appreciated.

Roman Day

4GW

On Friday 24th March, Year 4 held a Roman Day. In the morning, we learnt about the intricate mosaic designs that would have been found in the Roman times. We created our own Roman Helmet mosaics, even something this small required a lot of patience!

During the afternoon, we recalled information about the Roman Army and what made them so successful. We practised some of their defensive battle formations, using the shields we had made for homework. These included; The Rebel-Cavalry, The Orb, The Wedge and The Tortoise.

Once we had practised these, the 2 classes took it in turns to attack or be attacked…

Attack!

After all of that battling, it was time to feast.
