Mini Marathon 2026

TCS Mini London Marathon in Schools | London Marathon Events

This London Mini Marathon has seen more than one million children in the country take on the challenge since 2020. More than 300,000 students have joined so far this year, including approximately 530 of our own pupils! Over the course of the week, all of the children at Coundon Primary School (from Nursery to Year 6) took part in the Mini Marathon 2026. Each year group chose a to complete the distance in one go or spread it over multiple days. They ran, jogged or walked a two-mile course within our school setting. These sorts of events strongly promote physical activity, and the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle, as well as ensuring inclusivity. It was so lovely to see the children and staff outside, enjoying the movement and the sense of community that such an event brings.

As well as our children enjoying the chance to get out running, some of our staff have also been doing the same… Mr Vernon (IT support) completed the Brighton Marathon the previous weekend and Mr Fortune (SSO) completed the Coventry Half Marathon the following weekend. A huge well done to both of them, excellent role models for leading active and healthy lifestyles and both raising money for some extremely worthwhile charities.

Year 2 Gymnastics 2026

A small group of year 2 gymnasts did us proud when they represented Coundon in the recent Coventry School Games Gymnastics Competition. The children each performed a short floor and vault routine. They were then allowed time to use the Air Track as a bit of a treat.

They only went and secured 1st Place for their rigorously rehearsed routines!

A massive well done to the children, but also a huge thank you to all of the dedicated staff involved in practices at lunchtimes, and taking the children to the event itself.

Go Coundon!

PGL Year 4 Residential

On Wednesday 11th June, 35 excited Year 4 children set off for their 3-day residential trip to PGL. The coach journey was full of chatter and energy! When we arrived, we dropped off our bags, had a picnic lunch, and jumped straight into our first activities: Aeroball and the giant swing. Both were a huge hit and definitely set the tone for the trip!

Afterwards, we got settled into our dorms and headed to dinner, which was very much needed after such a busy start! We wrapped up our first day with a campfire and toasted marshmallows, which was the perfect way to wind down.

Thursday was our full day, and after a bit less sleep than we all would’ve liked, we hit the ground running. A big breakfast set us up for a morning of problem solving, where the kids had to work together and really use their teamwork and communication skills. Then came raft building, in the rain! The rafts held up, but since we were soaked anyway, lots of us ended up in the lake for a proper splash.

After a quick change and some lunch, it was on to orienteering and micro scooters. Thankfully, the sun came out and gave us a bit of a boost. By this point, the kids were knackered and begging for bed, but we still had dinner and the PGL tournament ahead. Let’s just say, bedtime was a lot quicker and quieter that night!

Friday morning came around fast. We packed up, had breakfast, and took on our final activities: a sensory challenge (blindfolded, following sounds and using touch to get around the course) and climbing, which was a brilliant way to finish. Then it was time to hop back on the coach, a much quieter journey home!

The children were absolute stars; well behaved, enthusiastic, and willing to give everything a go, even when it pushed them out of their comfort zones. They really did us proud!

Flame of Friendship Finale

On Monday 8th July, a group of carefully chosen, keen dancers from years 3 and 5 were chosen to take part in the closing ceremony for the Flame of Friendship. The finale took place at the University of Warwick, where the Royal Opera House led a dance with the children from Coundon and 40 other schools from Coventry.

After a couple of practices of the dance, the Flame of Friendship torch arrived at the University and we completed the dance for a final time. There was lots of music, smiles and energy for the final dance. A procession was then led by a samba band from the sports ground to the sports hub – it was great fun!

At the hub, there was a short ceremony, where we heard a variety of short talks from a few professors of the University and the Mayor of Coventry. We also watched a video of the torch being designed and made, followed by a photo montage of the torch relay. To close, we performed the Lady Godiva song.

The Flame of Friendship 2024 – The Coventry School’s Olympic Torch Relay

In the run up to the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic games, 62 Coventry primary, secondary and special educational needs schools will be participating in a torch relay, the Flame of Friendship, leaving Coventry Cathedral on Thursday 22nd February and finishing on the University of Warwick campus on Monday 8th July. https://warwick.ac.uk/wie/flame_of_friendship/

The torch is bespoke to this event, designed especially for this event, designed as part of a competition in which more than 2000 Coventry pupils took part. The winning design was submitted by a pupil from Finham Park School and has subsequently been redeveloped at WMG, on the University of Warwick campus.

On Wednesday 12th June, it was Coundon Primary’s turn to receive the Flame of Friendship. Sherbourne Fields travelled to our school to deliver it to us. They were greeted by the whole of Coundon during a warm and welcoming lap of the school grounds, where we clapped, cheered and waved scarves, flags or banners for them. The children really enjoyed themselves.

Then on Thursday 13th June, we had the honour of delivering the Flame of Friendship onto Allesley Primary School. The children that took place in the delivery of the torch showed great pride in being chosen and were great representatives for our school. A special thanks needs to go to Miss Mower and Miss Ferris, for agreeing to walk with them all the way!

Coventry Children’s Mile 2024

On Sunday 9th June, 33 Coventry schools (including Coundon) took part in the Children’s Mile! It was once again a lovely community event encouraging children to get active in a fun and positive way.

Before – ready and raring to run!

After – ready and raring to go home!

Thirteen of our children took part in this event (from years 3 to 6) alongside Mrs Woodroffe and Mrs Gray. The amazing and slightly competitive Miss Ferris also gave up her morning to join us and show her support! The children were great, they were full of enthusiasm and all ran the mile with Finley, Luca and Amelia making it back in the top 40 out of over 1000 runners!

Here’s a few snaps from the event. Let’s hope these children can encourage more children to be involved next year!

Orienteering

On Tuesday 21st May, a small group of Year 4 children were selected to take part in an orienteering event at Rough Close, Coventry. Other schools also took part in this activity to add an element of friendly competition in a fun environment. This event was an Olympic themed, scavenger hunt activity and was a great opportunity for the children to put into practice the skills they learnt earlier in the year during PE. A lovely afternoon was had by all.
