Welcome to the Year 5 Blog

We would like to wish Tristan, Maya, Aroush , Sam, Jake, Emily, Chantelle and Abbie who have all celebrated their birthdays since the school closure started.

The first ‘Teachers v Year 5 Pupils’ took place this morning.
The winners were ‘The Teachers’!
Another chance to beat the teachers will be on Monday 20th April at 10:00-10:30 am.

Great work Lucas on your Mexican cooking project. A brilliant example of some of the work you have been completing.

Are you watching any films over the Easter Holiday? Click on the link below for a range of activities linked to films that you may have access to at home…
We are aware that this
will be a very different Easter holiday for many.
We have created a range of ideas and activities that you can get involved in.
Reading – READ, READ, READ! One of the most important life skills and links to so many areas of your learning. Read books at home. Read Fiction Express. Read magazines. We would love to hear about what you have been enjoying reading and some recommendations.
Maths – TT ROCKSTARS!! We know we say it all the time, but play, play and play some more. Challenge your teachers. Challenge your friends. Improve your ‘Rock Status’. Look out for live challenges with the teachers too. (The first one will be Tuesday 14th April at 10am)
Creative Curriculum –
This work could be completed in your exercise books or on the computer (as a powerpoint or even a video presentation)

Ancient Mayan Sites
Can you research some more information about the Mayans. Your challenge is to find out as much as you can about the main ancient Mayan sites such as Chichen Itza, Tulum and Coba.
This website is a good starting point http://www.mayankids.com/mmkplaces/mapregion.htm
Your challenge is to then create a travel guide for tourists on a visit to Mayan Mexico. Considerations to make: clear accurate information with the location of attractions, best way to get the attractions, how much seeing the attractions costs, what the must see and must do things are etc…
Disappearance
Why did the Mayans disappear? Use your research skills to try and find reasons why the Mayans disappeared. When you have completed your research write a short discussion text explaining the possible reasons for their disappearance.

Review
Write a review about your learning of the Mayans for year 4. What have you learnt? What was the best part of the topic? (e.g. Learning about the sacrifices, learning about the gods, map work, Mayan myths?)
More Activities – (You
do not need to complete all of these activities!)
Have a look at the ‘100 Things to do at Home’. Which ones will you try and
complete??
Have a look at the ‘Home Learning Grid’. Which ones will you try and complete??
During this holiday, it is also important that you do some of the things that
you enjoy and we look forward to hearing all about it when we are back at school.
Yours Sincerely
Mr Scott, Mr Tooby and Miss Bates

We understand that now the government have taken the step to close schools this will be inconvenient and possibly a bit overwhelming. It certainly wasn’t in our plans. We have developed a pack for ideas and activities over this time.
Tip 1: You don’t have to recreate school in your house. Desks and tables are not mandatory. In fact, sitting on a couch (even upside down) or in bed can make it more comfortable.
Tip 2: Read every day. Read to your child / children. Listen
to them read. Read comics, read picture books, read on-line, read books that
you loved when you were a child. And if you need some chill out time, find an
audiobook.
(Check out this website for more reading tips https://readforgood.org/reading-inspiration/
)
Tip 3: Play. Play board games and card games. Play charades. Play Pictionary. Have lego competitions – but try and stay away from the consoles!
Tip 4: Write letters and diary entries documenting your days. Keep them! It will be interesting to look back at these and remember the time they were stuck at home!
Tip 5: Enjoy a slow rhythm together at home…no early morning rushing to get to school on time.
Tip 6: Be creative. Do the things you don’t normally have time for. Build a fort. Design a robot. Bake cakes. Paint.
Tip 7: Make a record of what you have done with the day – take photos and email them to school. (Look out for updates on our Twitter feed to see if your photo makes it onto our twitter feed)
Tip 8: Get physical and get active. You may be in the
house but that doesn’t mean you can’t exercise.
