Head Teacher’s Award – Thursday 26th November

Great work Phoenix in 1DG, we have really seen a huge improvement in your efforts in Phonics and Reading! Keep up the hard work.

Well done to Ellisa in 1KB for working with determination and enthusiasm at all times and for being an all round super star!

Great work on your home learning Tabitha in 1KM. She put in so much effort despite having to isolate and work from home and completed all the work to an outstanding standard.

Reading and Phonics in Year One

Reading is incredibly important in Year One. The children will make use of their phonics, initially by recognising letter sounds and then by sound talk and blending those sounds. They are also taught to recognise ‘Tricky Words’, which are not phonetically decodable. Having missed so much of their phonics during lockdown, it is paramount that we ensure there are no gaps in their learning via phonics lessons, one to one reading with the adults in the year group and through guided reading sessions.

Alongside the work we are carrying out in school, we would like the support of our parents at home. The best way you can support your child’s reading, is to simply listen to them read at home 3 – 5 times a week, ideally. When you have heard your child read, please sign their diary so we can see that they have been practicing. This reading and the reading of the ‘Phase Words’ that we shall be sending home, make up your child’s reading homework.

To continue to support the children with their phonics, they have also all been issued with a ‘Reading Wise’ login. Please allow them to have some time to access this site, as it will address any gaps in their early phonics work.

Thank you for your continued support,

The Year One Team

NUMBOTS

While in Year One, we would like the children to make use of our subscription to NUMBOTS as part of their mathematics homework. Their usernames and passwords can be found on their reading diaries. Enjoy!

Head Teacher’s Award – Friday 13th November

Our children in Year One are continuing to work hard and really impress us. This week we would like to say a huge well done to…

Caiden in 1KM for creating a fantastic Bonfire Night picture. He used oil pastels to create a lovely background full of colourful fireworks. Then he used his careful cutting skills to cut out The Houses of Parliament for the foreground.

Theo in 1DG for working really hard on our Maths Day and creating a lovely shape picture. He used 2D shapes to draw around, he cut them out carefully and arranged them to create a fantastic picture.

Thomson in 1KB for a fantastic improvement in his behaviour this week and his improved focus during lesson time.

Troy in 1KB for showing exceptional behviour and great listening this week.

Scarlett in 1KM is a role model to the class and has been a super friend to many, including to our new starter!

Ocean in 1DG always works hard and this week contributed some lovely, very thoughtful ideas in PSHE.

Readingwise

Remember to take a look at ‘Readingwise’ during Half term if you get the chance. Practise those skills! Everyone should now have their own log in details in their reading diaries. Once you’ve mastered Phase 2 we will then be able to move you on.
