In topic, we will continue to learn about the Inuits and make comparisons about their way of life to ours.

In English, we will be developing our sentence structure and writing our news from the weekend.

In Maths, we will be learning and developing our knowledge of number bonds to 10 by doing a variety of practical activities to ensure this knowledge is embedded before moving on to recording the number sentences.

In continuous provision, we will be playing maths addition games, sorting alien and real words ,leaf printing and sorting photos to compare Inuits to us.

Important information:

On Fridays we will no longer be doing PE as the children have a 2 hour session on a Thursday. Every Friday this term we will be doing Music and RE as we will be practising our Christmas play “Snuggle up stable”. This has a Christian theme so the children will be learning about the birth of Jesus.

This coming Friday the 16th is a teacher training day so school will be closed for the children.

To support ‘Children in Need’ day this year, Mrs Maude is running a design a poster competition and on Thursday the we will be celebrating by wearing our pyjamas or something spotty to raise money for the charity.

Fireworks 2023 Video

It was wonderful to see so many of you attending our Firework Display this week. It was a fantastic event which brought the school community together. Asher S was the lucky winner of our raffle, pressing the button to launch the fireworks.

Welcome back to the second half of the Autumn term. It’s going to be a busy one!

This week we will enjoy our school fireworks night and we hope that we will see you there. We will have some activities in our continuous provision linked to fireworks night and the children will be doing printing in Art linked to fireworks.

In topic this week we will learn about the Inuit people and their life in the polar regions. In Science, we will be carrying out an experiment to find out which materials are best for warmth, flexibility, protection and which are waterproof.

In phonics, the children will be starting in their new groups and consolidating sounds or learning new ones depending on their progress last term.

In Maths, we will continue with addition and subtraction and problem-solving. Our maths star job will be learning about the part, part, whole model.

Severn Trent Assembly

This morning, Beth from Severn Trent water came to school to share an assembly with pupils from Y1-Y6. Beth explained the job that Severn Trent do; the process of cleaning water and importance of what you flush / put down the sink.

W/C 23rd October 2023

This week as part of our topic we will be learning about what continents are. We will be doing some map work to locate the continents on a world map and learning where we live in relationship to them. In our continuous provision we will be building igloos with sugar lumps. We will also be carrying out an investigation to test different types of gloves and the materials they are made from. We will find out what types of gloves are best for different jobs according to the materials they are made from.

In Maths this week we will be ordering numbers and using number lines. We will then be starting a new unit learning addition and subtraction. We will be consolidating this terms learning in continuous provision.

In phonics this week the children have been assessed and may change groups after half term.

In English this week the children will be introduced to word classes and will learn what a noun is.

Dog’s Trust

Sarah from the Dog’s Trust came to school today. She ran an assembly for Y1-Y6 to discuss safety around dogs. She then ran class workshops with pupils from Y3-Y6. She couldn’t bring her real dogs, but she did bring a couple of her cuddly ones.

This week as part of our topic we will be comparing the Arctic and Antarctic and learning about the different animals that live in the two polar region. We will be doing some map work to locate them on a world map and learning where we live in relationship to them. In our continuous provision we will be writing fact files about our favourite Polar region animal. We will also completing our penguin artwork ready for the Art exhibition in November.

In Maths this week we will be focusing on our problem solving and reasoning when comparing numbers. We will consolidate our understanding of 1 more and 1 less in our continuous provision activities.

Thank you for supporting your child with their reading and online work. We are so pleased that so many children are completing their homework.

The children have really enjoyed working on the star challenges this week. They have been keen to earn a Friday treat and work independently. We have seen some lovely written work about penguins. This week the children will be writing about the animals they saw at the zoo.

We enjoyed a wonderful trip to Twycross zoo this week, with one of the highlights being a visit to the penguins. This week as part of our topic we will be creating our penguin artwork ready for the Art exhibition in November.

In Maths this week we will be focusing on comparing numbers and 1 less than. We will be introducing key vocabulary such as fewer, more, same, less than, greater than and equal to.

This week we will be starting our star challenges. The children will have 5 star challenges to complete each week to receive a Friday treat. W/C: 2nd October 2023

This week is an exciting week in year one. On Tuesday we are going to Twycross zoo. This links to our topic on the Polar regions as we will be visiting the penguins and also links to our author study on Julia Donaldson as we will be going on a Gruffalo trail.

As part of our topic in science this week we will be investigating which are the best materials for keeping a Polar explorer warm.

In maths this week we will be learning to count backwards from a given number and learning how to count 1 more and 1 less from a given number.

Don’t forget to access Num bots for maths homework and further maths challenges.

Our fast track phonics intervention programme started this week which will help improve the progress of children in their phonics. Our children are working hard in phonics and we are already seeing great progress. Please encourage your child to do the reading and complete the quizes each week as this supports their learning in class. The phonics teachers can also check who has completed the homework and the children will receive extra dojos for doing their homework.

The school is currently looking for volunteer helpers. If you can spare a few hours a week to help in class please speak to one of the year one team.

The Year One Team

W/C 25th September 2023

This week in our topic on Polar regions we will be learning about what animals and Humans need to survive in a cold climate. We will investigate what clothes, food and shelter an explorer would need for a polar expedition. We will also be designing a home for a penguin.

The children have made a great start in their phonics groups and we have been impressed with how many children have completed their online homework. Please encourage your child to do the reading and complete the quizes each week as this supports their learning in class and the progress that they make. The phonics teachers can also check who has completed the homework and the children will receive extra dojos for doing their homework.

In Maths this week we will continue to learn place value and to count on one more from a given number. We will continue to practise number formation and learn the number words.

Each child has their own Num bots account to access the Maths activities for home work. You will find the login details in the reading diaries. Please encourage your child to try the activities as again this consolidates their Maths skills.

On Tuesday 3rd October we will be going on a trip to Twycross Zoo. We are still waiting for permission slips to come in from everyone. Please can you return these as soon as possible.

On 11th October 1AS will be doing their class assembly we hope that you will be able to join us.
