Transition links for MFL with Coundon Secondary

This week, we were really lucky to have Coundon secondary pupils delivering Spanish and French workshops to all of our Year 5 pupils.  We learnt some vocabulary, translated sentences and completed activities about each language.  This was also a great opportunity for our pupils to shine with their Spanish reading and translating – showcasing their own learning.  Mrs Riley is exploring future links with other schools as part of her role as the lead for Modern Foreign Languages with feeder schools.   Thank you to the pupils and teachers at Coundon Secondary School for the Spanish and French Workshops.

Children’s Mile 2025

On Sunday 22nd June, Coundon Primary took part in yet another Children’s Mile and it was our best turn out for a while! As usual, there was a buzzing atmosphere as over 30 schools took part in this year’s mile (with over 1000 children and hundreds of adults running, too). We took along 35 children and 22 supporting adults/members of staff. All of our runners really pushed themselves to get around the course and they had a great time!

Here are our top 3 runners, well done Patrick, Ben and Elliot!

A big thank you to everyone who joined us whether you ran or supported from the side lines, your entry fee has gone towards a great cause! A huge thank you also to the staff who gave up their time on a Sunday morning, and of course to the organisers for putting on this event each year!

Local History Week in Year 5

Year 5, as part of Local History Week, visited the Coventry Town Centre to compare old bomb sites with how it looks today.  They visited the Herbert Art Gallery, where they had the opportunity to try an Anderson shelter and explore artefacts, readings and footage from World War 2.  We finished the visit spending time in the old Coventry Cathedral – where we could clearly see a reminder of the bombing during the Coventry Blitz on 14th November 1940. In addition to this, the children also took part in a WOW day dressed as evacuees.

Lakeview River Study

Year 5 had a great time studying the River Sherbourne at Lakeview Park. They even found a water scorpion during their investigations.

A Musical Treat for KS2

On Friday 4th April, Coundon Primary School had the pleasure of a visit from some musicians from Bablake Senior School. We were treated to several performances of live music from pupils from year 9 to year 13. We listened to a vocal duet as well as performances played on the keyboard, saxophone, trombone, cello and trumpet.

The children discussed the names of the instruments that were used and which of the instrumental families each instrument belonged to. The children listened in awe and really enjoyed each performance.

A huge thank you to Bablake for coming to us to perform and also a huge thank you to Mrs Dalton for organising this treat on a Friday afternoon.

Careers Week – Language Lesson

As part of Careers week, Anna Grainger (the MFL link governor) delivered a taster sign language lesson.  She spoke to us about career opportunities using languages.  We learnt the letters of the alphabet and how to say our name.

Coundon Wedge River Study

Friday 28th February 2025

Year 5 visited Coundon Wedge after exploring the features of a river.  They were able to study the River Sherbourne; soil erosion, meandering, a weir, manmade and natural features in Geography.  They also collected water samples and collected litter to bring safely back to school so that it did not contaminate our local river.  We love our local environment and really enjoyed seeing a real river in action.
