A Royal Celebration

On Friday 5th May, we celebrated the upcoming Coronation of King Charles III. We had a whole school assembly to start the day and learnt all about the history of this type of ceremony and what to expect.

Back in class, we made bunting! This was later put up outside ready for our picnic in the afternoon. During the morning we also had a cake sale and made some crowns to wear to the picnic.

In the afternoon, we took all of our chairs and tables outside to enjoy a ‘street party’ style picnic with our phase. We enjoyed eating in the sunshine and using the photo props!

4GW finished the day with a Kahoot Quiz. Here you can see our winning team and our runners up… WELL DONE!

Roman Day

4GW

On Friday 24th March, Year 4 held a Roman Day. In the morning, we learnt about the intricate mosaic designs that would have been found in the Roman times. We created our own Roman Helmet mosaics, even something this small required a lot of patience!

During the afternoon, we recalled information about the Roman Army and what made them so successful. We practised some of their defensive battle formations, using the shields we had made for homework. These included; The Rebel-Cavalry, The Orb, The Wedge and The Tortoise.

Once we had practised these, the 2 classes took it in turns to attack or be attacked…

Attack!

After all of that battling, it was time to feast.

Coventry Building Society’s Young Writers Competition Winners

We are proud to announce that 2 of our pupils were named as finalists in this year’s  Coventry Building Society’s Young Writers competition:

Evelyn W (Year 3) for her story ‘‘The window of food’

Jacob S (Year 4) for his story ‘The Mystery of the Missing Detective’

Both were invited to attend an awards ceremony at Coventry Building Society Arena on Thursday 2nd March,  along with Mrs Maude and their families. The competition received 2,020 entries, with the number being reduced down to 20 for the finalist’s event.

Evelyn and Jacob had an amazing time, with a special tour of the arena before attending the ceremony.  Both children were highly commended for their writing and received a certificate and a goodie bag.

What an amazing achievement!

World Book Day 2023

Today, the children in 4GW enjoyed a slightly more relaxed day. We started the day with a ‘Booky Brunch’, sharing some information about a chosen book whilst enjoying a snack. Later, we participated in a live lesson from an author and illustrator, who shared their top tips for creating their own animal character profile. They then used their character to create a story board and a mini-book!

Maths Photo Competition

During this week, your child has participated in maths activities related to Coventry, including its history.

As part of this, we are running a maths photo competition ‘Looking at Coventry Through Maths Eyes’. The aim of this is to help everyone realise that maths is all around us and our local environment is mathematically rich. Using the things around us is a superb way to engage your child in talking about maths.

Over half term, we would like you and your child to take a photo/snapshot of familiar things that capture some aspect of real-life mathematics in and around Coventry.  We would like you to send your photo into us with a mathematical question (see examples below).  There are prizes up for grabs!

Please send your ‘Looking at Coventry Through Maths Eyes’ photos/questions to Mrs Walton by Wednesday 1st March to [email protected]    Please state clearly your child’s name and class.

I looking forward to seeing all your photos,

Mrs Walton

National Story Telling Week

For homework in Year 4, the children were asked to read part of a story and send in a video as part of National Story Telling Week. These are now available on the Year 4 Teams page.

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust 30.1.23

This week is National Story Telling week. Duing our session today we completed some activities linked to this. First, we created our own story sticks by going on a walk around the school grounds and collected things to attach to our story stick. Next we listened to the sounds around us and created our own sound story maps using symbols to represent the noises we heard.
