Year 5 learnt about the key events in the Coventry Blitz on November 14th 1940. They experienced the Blitz at the Transport Museum, visited the Herbert Art Gallery to sit in an Anderson Shelter and reflected on the impact of the Blitz in the old Coventry Cathedral. The children explored the wealth of history in our local town centre and how events from the past will have impacted on the city and its people.
This week, is local history week and we will be learning all about how Coventry has changed over the years and learning about the story of Lady Godiva. We will be doing history every afternoon this week instead of our other foundation subjects.
Last week, the children completed the phonics screening test and we were very impressed with the amazing progress the children have made. Well done to the children and parents and carers for all your support in their home learning. Please continue to read the online books, complete the quiz and read the books sent home.

On Sunday 9th June, 33 Coventry schools (including Coundon) took part in the Children’s Mile! It was once again a lovely community event encouraging children to get active in a fun and positive way.
Before – ready and raring to run!
After – ready and raring to go home!
Thirteen of our children took part in this event (from years 3 to 6) alongside Mrs Woodroffe and Mrs Gray. The amazing and slightly competitive Miss Ferris also gave up her morning to join us and show her support! The children were great, they were full of enthusiasm and all ran the mile with Finley, Luca and Amelia making it back in the top 40 out of over 1000 runners!
Here’s a few snaps from the event. Let’s hope these children can encourage more children to be involved next year!

We are looking forward to lots of fun and having an enjoyable last few weeks with your children. Mrs Alford will be joining us in Reception as the TA for RMT. We are delighted to welcome Mrs Alford to the team.
The children were all assessed before the holidays and will be starting in their new phonics groups this week. There are also a couple of videos below to help practice some of the sounds.
In Maths this week we will be focusing on patterns. The children have a good knowledge of basic repeating patterns but we will now look at more complex patterns and how patterns can be made in different ways. The children will be identifying pattern rules and will be creating their own patterns in different ways.
This week we will have a focus on poetry looking at what a poem is and how to perform a poem. We will be writing our own class poems and will also perform a poem using expression and intonation to bring our poems to life. This would be good opportunity to look for rhyming words in books that you read with your child. Can they recognise the words that rhyme? Can they think of any other to extend the rhyming string?
RMT will be presenting their class assembly on Wednesday 5th June. RMT parents are invited to come along and watch.
We would like to say a massive thank you for the amazing sponsor money that has so far been sent in to school. We have raised over £1000 which will now be spend on books that support the topics being taught for the children to read. If there is any outstanding sponsor money please send it in ASAP.

Revisit to Strengthen Phonics – session 1
Dear Parent,
Phonics Screening Check
In preparation for the year 1 phonics screening check in June, your child will need to be secure with reading words that contain the set 3 sounds. To support your child at home with this, I have attached some QR codes below which will take you to the teaching videos of the sounds your child will need to revisit.
Remember when reading a word, your child should use the strategy ‘special friends, Fred talk, read the word’.
In Maths, we will be learning about making arrays, making doubles and making equal groups by grouping or sharing.
