On Friday 26th September 2025, Mrs Riley, MFL lead, took some of the Year 5 and 6 pupils to Warwick University to take part in the European Day of Languages. This was an enrichment opportunity for pupils to further develop their Spanish skills. The pupils took part in four activities: Flamenco dancing; learning about the historic story of Don Quixote; an escape room and a Spanish quiz. It was a priviledge to take the Coundon Pupils on Friday who displayed their Spanish speaking skills throughout the day. Well done Year 5 and 6.

We would like to offer a huge welcome to you and your child for their Reception year. The children have all come into school so well and have have had lots of fun exploring the setting and finding out what there is to play and learn with.
Thank you for helping your child come in to school each day ready for the day ahead. Please remember to provide your child with a waterproof coat with a hood and a water bottle, only containing water (no juice please as new government guidelines indicate this helps lead to tooth decay). Please allow your child to come into the classroom with their coat and bag so that they can learn how to take them off and how to organise themselves and their belongings. This year the children will be working hard on independence and doing things for themselves – your help with this is extremely welcomed.
Thank you to those parents who have sent in wellington boots for their child. We ask that all children please have a named pair of wellington boots in school so that they may continue to play in the wet weather. Send these in to school and place them outside your child’s classroom door.
The children have coped very well in the canteen this week and have been independently choosing their lunch. You can find the school dinner menus on the school website. Please go through this with your child so they can choose something they are likely to eat. Some of the children are getting a little upset or are not eating very much as they do not know what to choose. If you wish for your child to change to packed lunches then you must notify the school office preferably a week in advance so that adaptions can be made to the amount of food ordered.

This week we are looking at the Author David McKee for our Author study with a focus on Elmer. The children will be involved in hearing the story, sequencing the story, making, colouring and collaging different Elmer’s as well as acting like an elephant and taking part in an Elephant parade. Please send in a clean empty plastic milk bottle so your child can make their own model Elmer to add to our class parade of elephants.

On Friday, your child should have come home with the gift of a story book. This is their book to keep and has a special message inside for them. At Coundon we foster a love of reading and hope that your child adds this book to their home library and enjoys reading it with you.
If you have any problems or need to speak to a member of staff then please speak to us at the start or end of the day or email us on
Have a lovely week

Year 5, as part of Local History Week, visited the Coventry Town Centre to compare old bomb sites with how it looks today. They visited the Herbert Art Gallery, where they had the opportunity to try an Anderson shelter and explore artefacts, readings and footage from World War 2. We finished the visit spending time in the old Coventry Cathedral – where we could clearly see a reminder of the bombing during the Coventry Blitz on 14th November 1940. In addition to this, the children also took part in a WOW day dressed as evacuees.

On Thursday 20th March, Year 3 celebrated our topic of Ancient Egyptians by participating in an Egyptian day! We dressed up in costumes and had lots of fun engaging in many activities.

These activities included: learning about hieroglyphics, Egyptian Gods and Goddesses,

Creating Egyptian collars,

Exploring a tomb,
Painting an Egyptian landscape and drawing a symmetrical picture of Cleopatra.

Everyone had a great time and looked fab!

This week we will begin our topic on Spring. The children will be learning all about the season and the changes that have occurred from Winter and Autumn. We will be looking for signs of spring in the environment and will be going on a walk around the school site looking for signs of spring. The children will continue to observe their bean stalk plants from last week to see if these have started to grow. When out and about with your child, encourage them to look for any signs of spring and talk about what you see.

The children are all working well in their phonic groups and are now using what they know to write simple sentences and captions. Continue to read with your child every night and don’t forget to log on to Oxford owl to do the quiz and read the book on there also. It is lovely seeing the children become more confident with both their reading and writing and we are seeing lots of writing in the children’s play. Below are some more blending videos for extra practise.

This week in Maths children will build on their earlier work matching numerals to quantities by now finding and making pairs. They will begin to understand that a pair is two. Children will be provided with collections of items that come in pairs and twill begin to notice that some quantities will have an odd one left over with no partner.. Encourage your child to notice pairs and odd and even numbers through games involving matching pairs, such as snap or memory games.

We are loving the sunny weather at the minute but please be reminded that your child needs to bring a waterproof coat with a hood every day. Our weather is very changeable and even though sunny it is still cold when the sun goes in. The children have access throughout the day to our outside area and spend their lunch break outside – even in the rain! It is better for your child to have a coat that stays on their peg if not needed rather than having no coat and not having one when they need it.
have a lovely week

In nursery we have been reading the story of the very hungry caterpillar written by Eric Carle.
We have been doing lots of activities related to the story including sequencing events, learning about the lifecycle of the butterfly, painting butterfly’s and creating pattern caterpillars.
We also tried tasting all the fruit the hungry caterpillar ate in the story.

This week the children will be learning all about the Lunar/Chinese new year. This year is the year of the snake. The children will learn all about the celebration, why it is celebrated and how people celebrate it. The children will be involved in a range of different activities where they will explore story, song, dance and decorations. They will have the opportunity to taste some Chinese food and will make their own decoration. You may like to support this learning at home by talking about the celebration and asking them what they have learned and could even have some Chinese food. We would love to see the children exploring the celebration at home so don’t forget to send in any photos to [email protected] or [email protected].

The children are all working hard on their blending in phonics with the sounds they already know as well as being introduced to new sounds. Continue to go through all of the sounds at home and try to do the reading activity or book that is sent home on a Friday every evening. Don’t forget to sign your child’s diary when you hear them read or do the activity with them. If your child has log in details for Oxford Owl on the front of their diary then don’t forget to log in and for your child to do those activities also. Below are some blending videos that you may wish to do with your child.

In Math’s this week we are
The children had a wonderful day last week when we had our Frozen day. They all looked fantastic in their ‘Frozen’ inspired outfits and joined in with a range of different activities. The children have learned lots of facts over the last few weeks about winter and have been talking about differences to the season of Autumn that they have learned about previously. We hope they have talked about these with you and shared some of their knowledge. Below are some photos from the day.
We are looking forward to a fun week celebrating the lunar new year . Have a lovely week
The Reception Team

This week we will be focusing on Christmas and will be spending some time practising for our Christmas Nativity play. The children have all been given a part in the play and will all dress up in a costume to take part. We have all of the costumes in school so please do not worry about buying or making anything. All we ask is that you help your child to learn any lines that we send home. The children will perform their nativity on Thursday 12th December at 2.15 and Friday 13th December at 9.15. You should have received all the information on how to get tickets. If you have any questions about tickets then please speak to the office staff.

The children are progressing well in their Phonics groups and staff are continually assessing the children’s knowledge to make sure they are in the correct group. Continue to do the reading activities in your child’s reading diary. Soon we will be sending out log in details for those children on reading books to access additional activities online to support your child’s reading. As the texts become more difficult, your child will bring home a book bag book to read and they will be asked to go online to read the book that they have looked at that week in school as well as a quiz. The extra practice at home will help your child to develop confidence and fluency in their reading.

The children all had a lovely day at Ash End Children’s Farm. They enjoyed seeing lots of different animals and had a great time feeding the goats and sheep. The children were involved in a variety of different activities throughout the day but I’m sure they will all agree the highlight was our visit to see Father Christmas. The children were very well behaved and we had a lot of tired eyes on our Journey home. We hope your child was eager to tell you all about it!
