Week Beginning 2nd November 2020

In phonics this week we will be recapping all of the phonemes previously learned – s,a,t,p,i,n,m,d,g,o,c,k. We will be learning to blend to read simple CVC words and learning the digraph ( two letters that make one sound) ck. We are focussing on reading and writing words using these phonemes.

In the wider curriculum we will be looking at Bonfire night. We will be reading stories, making lots of crafts, doing firework dances and talking about bonfire safety. Can you tell a grown up how to stay safe on bonfire night?

Remember to keep reading and going through the letter sounds that were sent home for half term.

This week in Phonics we are looking at the phonemes c and k. We are also doing lots of learning on blending sounds together to make words such as c-a-t, m-a-n, p-i-g, we are also looking at the graphemes for these letters and putting them together to make words to read. We are practising to write all the graphemes that we have learned so far: s,a,t,p,i,n,m,d,g,o,c and g. Can you form all of these letters? remember to start each letter at the top and keep your pen on the page until the letter is complete. Can you read or write any simple CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words?

In Maths this week we are starting to look at the numbers 1,2 and 3. We are looking at different ways of representing each of these numbers and what the number looks like. Can you make the numbers in different ways? Practise writing each of the numerals if you can.

This week we are looking at the story of ‘Room on the Broom’. We will be looking at rhyming language and making other rhyming words. We will be making our own witches hats and will be acting out the story as well as retelling it in our own words. We will be looking at pumpkins and seeing what is inside. We are also going to look at an erupting pumpkin with bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar.

Please continue to read everyday. Retell the story in your own words, use voices for the characters, make up your own endings and answer questions about what you can see. Can you remember what happened in the story without looking at the pictures? What happened at the beginning middle and end of the story?

Week Beginning 12th October 2020

This week we will be recapping the previous phonemes learnt – s,a,t,p,i,n,m and d. We will start to learn how to blend these letters to make simple words. We will also be learning the phoneme ‘o’ and ‘g’. Can you write all of the letters you have learned so far?

In Maths we will be focussing on recognising and recreating patterns. We will use a variety of materials such as natural objects such as leaves and acorns as well as painting paterns and drawing our own patterns. Can you make patterns with items you find around the house?

In our curriculum work we will be focussing on the story ‘The Little Red Hen’ and will be linking it to Harvest time and the Autumn.

Don’t forget to try and read every night. Talk about the book and try to tell the story using the pictures. Can you answer questions about the story? We also need to keep practising our name writing, remember you can write on lots of different things it doesn’t just need to be on paper.

WB: 5th October 2020

This week in Phonics we are learning the phonemes i, n, m and d. The children will learn the name of each letter and the sound that the letter makes. We will focus on the formation of each letter, starting at the top of each letter and keeping our pen/ pencil on the page until the letter is formed.

In Maths we are looking at comparing size, mass and capacity and comparing amounts. You could make towers of Lego of different amounts, find things of different sizes and containers that hold different amounts. Can you put them in order?

We will continue with our learning on Autumn, looking at the other seasons and talking about the changes and the differences between the seasons.

Don’t forget to read your reading book each day. This week you will have a picture book that you should talk about with a grown up. Try to use the pictures to tell the story. Can you retell the story without the picture? talk about what you liked and disliked about the story. Have you done what is in the story or what would you have done if you were the character?

WB: 28th September 2020

This week we have started to do some of our weekly learning. We have had lots of fun and have learned new sounds as well as exploring matching and sorting and have started to learn about the season of Autumn.

In Phonics we have learned the phonemes s, a, t and p. We have learned the letter name and the sound of the letter. We have identified items beginning with each letter and have formed each letter. Please practise writing these letters at home as you say the sound. You could write on paper, in paint, in flour, in shaving foam, in chalk inside or outside or any way you can think.

In Maths we have been matching items that are the same and have been sorting to different criteria such as colour, pattern or shape. Can you find different items at home that you can sort? Maybe you could go on an Autumn walk and collect some foliage – how can you sort them? Maybe colour of leaves, type of item etc.

From Next week all children will be coming home with a reading book on Monday. They are to keep this book at home and return to school on Friday so it can be quarantined over the weekend and a new book given the following week. Please go through the book several times and talk about what is happening. Model how to tell the story in a narrative if it is a picture book. There are lots of ideas at the front of the reading diary to help you. Please fill in the reading diary each time you hear your child read. They should read every day.
