Week Beginning 14th December

This week, we will be having lots of fun taking part in Christmas activities, which the children will be bringing home to show you. We will also be having our last practise of our Nativity and filming the final production, so keep an eye on your Teams for when the video of your child’s class is up!

A reminder that our Christmas jumper day is Monday 14th December and all children taking part need to bring £1 into school. We will also be having our Christmas film on Friday 18th December. As the children had their non-school uniform day on Monday, they will be expected to come into school in usual school-uniform, however they are welcome to wear something festive. See Friday Focus for any additional information regarding this week’s school announcements.

The Reception team would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Week Beginning 7th December 2020

In phonics this week, we will be reciting the phonemes we have previously learned – s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, e, u, r, h, b, f. Our new learning will focus on the letter ‘l’. We will be thinking of simple words we can write using the letter ‘l’, for example, ‘leg’, ‘lend’, ‘lad’, ‘lest’. We will also be recapping out tricky words and how we can use these in a sentence. The children love playing phonics games, there are some free resources on PhonicsPlay if you would like to play some at home to support their learning.

In maths this week, we are consolidating our learning from the term, using Christmas themed activities. We will be focusing on size, patterns, numbers up to 5 and shapes. The children will be creating Christmas cards using triangles, circles, squares and rectangles. Ask the children if they can spot different shapes in the environment, such as, windows, doors, bricks etc.

In the wider curriculum, we will be practising our Nativity ready to be recorded for the following week. If you haven’t already done so, can you please return your consent slips for your children to be recorded, please.

Week Beginning 23rd November 2020

In phonics this week, we will be reciting the phonemes we have previously learned – s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, e, u, r. We will also be practising segmenting and blending words which supports our reading and spelling. We are stretching the children by asking them to segment and blend words with 4 sounds, such as, ‘s-t-a-ck’ and ‘s-t-o-p’. Our new learning this week, will focus on the phonemes ‘h’ and ‘b’. We will practise writing them and using them in simple words. We have noticed children have learned some tricky words at home, which is fantastic! Keep up the good work. Try practising letter formation at home, as this will support their writing skills.

In Maths this week, we are focusing on different ways we can make 4 and 5. We will be using double sided counters and blocks to support the children’s learning. This will help to identify we can make 4 and 5 in different ways and how we can also make different shapes using 4 and 5 blocks. We will also be learning about 1 more and 1 less. We will be having lots of fun creating our own nursery rhymes, using different objects in the classroom to represent what happens when we take 1 away. Sing ‘5 green bottles’ and ‘5 speckled frogs’ at home, it is a great way bring fun into Maths.

In the wider curriculum, we will be reading the story ‘Aliens Love Underpants’, to discuss what we mean by similarities and differences. We will create our own underpants and observe how some of us will use the same colours/patterns and some of us will choose differently. This will lead onto learning how we all have similarities and differences within ourselves.

Week Beginning 16th November 2020

In phonics this week, we will be recapping the phonemes we have previously learned – s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, e, u. We will also be segmenting and blending words that have the digraph ‘ck’ in them e.g. ‘sock’ ‘deck’ ‘pick’. Our new learning will focus on the phoneme, ‘r’. We have also introduced the children to some tricky words, such as, ‘the’ and ‘I’. The children love the ‘Tricky Words’ song on YouTube! Try and play it to them at home to reinforce their understanding.

In Maths this week, we are focusing on the numbers 4 and 5. The children will be learning about how we can make 4 and 5 in different ways. We will also be focusing on number formation and having lots of practise on how to write the numbers. Try asking your children whether they can find 4 of their favourite toys at home? Count them out with them.

In the wider curriculum, we are introducing the reasons why we celebrate Christmas and discussing the nativity story with the children. We will also be talking about day and night, and different routines we have when it is daytime and when it is nighttime.

Please remember you can send in any videos and photographs of the learning your children do at home, to the class email addresses.
