Welcome to the Reception Blog

We would like to thank all the parents that handed in their ‘About My Family’ sheets, last week. It has been lovely to get to know all of the interesting facts about the children’s families and where they come from.
In phonics this week, we will be recapping the sounds ai, ee, ie, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, air, ure and er. Similar to the previous weeks, we are focusing on independent sentence writing. We will be thinking of different words that have the sounds in them and choosing a word/words to use in a sentence. We will be stretching the children’s learning, by using different ways to start their sentences e.g. first, then, finally. In turn, this will support their use of narrative in their writing.
In maths this week, we will be focusing on how we can use different shapes to make other shapes. We will start by looking at right-angled triangles and how we can create a square by putting two of them together. Then, we will be using small, square tiles to create long, thin rectangles, short, wide rectangles and larger squares. Finally, we will be looking at how we can create patterns using different shapes and we will be reading the story ‘Grandpa’s Quilt’ to support our learning.
In the wider curriculum, we will be continuing our theme of ‘All About Me’. This week, we will be focusing on how we grow and change. Children will think about when they were babies and what they are like now. What is different? How have we changed? To support the children’s learning, we are asking parents to send in any baby photographs they have of the children, to help them recognise the changes that has happened to them. These will be well looked after and returned at the end of the week!

We would like to wish everyone a lovely, relaxing half-term break, and look forward to seeing all the children back at school, refreshed, when we return!
The Reception Team
Well done to all our superstars this week!

The Reception team would like to say a huge thank you to all of the children and parents, for working so hard creating their instruments last Thursday. They looked absolutely fantastic and the children enjoyed playing them in their class bands, when they returned on Friday!
In phonics this week, we will be recapping the digraphs, ‘or’, ‘ur’, ‘ow’ and ‘oi’. We will be asking the children to think of words with these sounds in and use them in a sentence. We will be focusing on writing sentences independently, using our phonetical knowledge to write the words. We will be stretching some of the children, by asking them to use a conjunction in their sentences (and, because, or).

In maths this week, we will be focusing on addition. We will be revising what happens when we add one more to a number/objects. We will then move on to adding 2 or more to a number or objects, using ten frames to support this. We will be asking the children to identify how many objects we have to begin with, then add objects to this number – how many altogether? How many objects did we have to start with?

In the wider curriculum, we will be introducing the theme ‘Ourselves’. This week’s focus will be on what makes us different or similar to our friends. We will be discussing our appearance and focusing on using the vocabulary, differences and similarities. We will also be discussing what we like and dislike, and how this can also differ from our friends. The children will talk to their friends about what activities they enjoy and the activities they do not enjoy as much.

We hope you all had a lovely Bank Holiday weekend, even with the horrible weather. This week is a short 3 day week in school as we are closed on Thursday for polling day. This is a home learning day and the children will be set an art task to complete on the day. We will be making something from Junk materials so please keep hold of some of your recycling materials for Thursday. We will be asking the children to think about what they want to make and to create a design of what they what to make before they make it. The children will be expected to bring back their design and their model to show and use on Friday.
Phonics – this week in Phonics we will be recapping on the phonemes oa, oo and ar. The children will be writing words and trying to use the words in a sentence. We are having a big push on sentence writing over the next few weeks so will be trying to write sentences as much as we can. Any extra practise at home would be fabulous – don’t forget to email us a picture so we can see how hard your child is working.
Maths – This week we are looking back at shape and pattern. The children will be trying to identify the different shapes and patterns and will be creating some of their own. By being able to see patterns the children will then be better at problem solving. WE will be doing some extra problem solving activities this week as this is a key skill we need more practise on.
Reading – This week we will be reading different stories this week and will be focusing on the structure on the stories. We will be trying to fill out a story mountain which will help us when trying to plan our own stories. When reading books with your child, see if they can tell you the structure of the story using the story mountain headings as seen below.

Have a wonderful week and we can’t wait to see your wonderful creations and designs on Friday.

In maths this week, we will be continuing our learning of numbers up to 20. We will be focusing on ordering numbers and recognising when there is a number missing. On Friday, we will be looking at capacity and using containers to identify which one holds more, using cubes. The children will use ten frames, to identify how many cubes each container is holding. We will also be playing various maths games, such as bingo and ‘What’s the missing number?’.

In phonics this week, we will be reviewing our learning of the sounds ‘air’, ‘ure’, ‘er’, ‘ee’, ‘ai’ and ‘igh’. We will also be developing their knowledge of tricky words and how to read and write them. Children will be focusing on implementing their phonic knowledge to help them read and write words and sentences. We will also be creating a shared write in the theme of superheroes, this will help the children use their phonics to write a sentence about the superhero they have created.

In the wider curriculum, we will be continuing the theme of superheroes. We will be focusing on how the children can be superheroes and what it takes to make super choices, inside and outside of the classroom. We will be creating a class super hero, which the children will decide what they will wear and what super powers they may have. On Friday 30th April, we will be celebrating our superhero theme by asking the children to come into school dressed up as a superhero. Remember, this does not need to be a shop bought costume, this can be anything that represents why the children are special and super.

Have a super week!
The Reception Team

The Reception team are delighted to welcome all the children back from the Easter break. We hope you have had a lovely couple of weeks rest and are ready to return to school for some super learning!
In phonics this week, we will be revising the learning we did in the Spring term. We will be focusing on the sounds; ai, ee, igh, oa, ar, oo, ow, ear and oi. We will be playing physical phonics games and using the sounds we have learned to write sentences. Our main focus this week, is to apply the phonics we have learned into our reading and writing.
In maths this week, we will be starting to learn numbers to 20. We will be looking at the numerals 11 to 20 and how we can represent the number using different objects. This will allow the children to see the tens and ones and how this corelates with the numeral. We will also be introducing estimating amounts using objects. The children will hold different amounts in each hand and estimate which they think has more. They will look at their objects and estimate if they think there is more or less than 10.

In the wider curriculum, we will be having a super hero week! We will be reading stories about different superheroes and what makes them super. The children will be designing their own super hero costume and discussing what their powers would be. We will focus on how we all have the abilities to be super heroes, whether it is through being kind, helping others, eating healthy and any talents we have. To celebrate this, we will be asking the children to come into school on Friday 30th May in a super hero costume of their choice. You can create your own costume or wear one they may already have at home.

Have a fab week!
The Reception team
In phonics this week, the children will be focusing on learning longer words and using them in a sentence. We will also be learning how to identify syllables in words and playing sound games to help us. Over the Easter break, try playing some phonics games on phonicsplay.co.uk. The children enjoy the games and it is a great way to keep practising segmenting and blending.

In maths this week, we will be playing lots of maths games and keeping the learning fun for the last few days before we break up. At home over the Easter break, you can play some online maths games on topmarks.co.uk. Try the games focused around number recognition, shapes and combining two groups, as this is the learning we have been focusing on over the last 2 weeks. Also, number bonds to 10 songs are great on YouTube, to support the children’s recognition of them.

In the wider curriculum, we will be learning all about Easter celebrations and the different ways people celebrate over the Easter period. The children will be creating their own Easter eggs and taking part in an Easter egg hunt on Thursday. We will be reading stories about the Easter bunny and chocolate eggs! We will be practising our sentence writing by writing Easter cards to our family.

Over the Easter break, please ensure the children are reading as much as they can. Access your Reading Wise and Oxford Owl accounts for a wide range of reading ability appropriate texts.
Have a fantastic Easter break everyone!
