Head Teacher Awards 18th June
Week commencing 21.06.21
This week in phonics we are continuing our work on phase 3 strategies and applying our knowledge to reading and writing. We will also practice our tricky words and play a variety of phonics games.

In maths this week we are introducing odd and even numbers. We will be playing games outside, creating pictures and securing our understanding of odd and even in a variety of different ways.

In our wider curriculum we are moving on to explore animal habitats and nocturnal and diurnal animals. We will be looking at how these animals have adapted to their habitat and how they differ from each other.

Have a fantastic week! The Reception team

Week Beginning 14th June
In phonics this week, we will be focusing on recapping all of the digraphs, trigraphs and tricky words we have learned throughout the year. We will be participating in different activities, such as spot the digraph in the short story, I spy and unscramble the sentence. We will also be focusing on our writing and continuing to apply the skills we have learned to our sentences. We will be asking the children to write independent sentences this week, to assess where they are and what they will need to work on going forward into year one.

In maths this week, we will be learning all about sharing different amounts. We will be using objects in the classroom and asking children to share them out equally with their partner. What happens when more children join the group? How many do each of you have? How could we share them out equally this time? Has the amount changed?
We will then move on to placing objects into a specific amount of containers. We will start by using 12 objects and sharing them between 3 pots. Then, we will discuss what happens if we share them between 4 pots and if there would be any left over if we kept adding more.
In the wider curriculum this week, we will be moving on from the types of homes we live in, here in the UK, and we will be discussing the different homes other people might live in from around the world. We will be discussing how the types of homes people will build, will depend on the climate and culture of where they live. We will be looking at photos of different types of homes from around the world and asking children to share their views and knowledge on them. We will then move on to discuss the different environments animals live in and how this is also based around their climate and lifestyle.

Can we remind any parents/caregivers that haven’t already done so, to hand in their consent forms for the Ash End Farm trip, and that the due date for payment is 2nd July. We would also like to remind everyone to go onto your Reading Wise log ins and read with your children as much as you can over the coming weeks.
We hope you all have a lovely week!

Week Beginning 7th June
The Reception team are so pleased to welcome back the children from their half-term break. We hope that you have had a lovely time in the sunshine and are well rested for the last half-term of the school year!

In phonics this week, we will be reviewing the digraphs and trigraphs we have learned throughout Reception. We will be using these to write sentences and read words. We will be playing games such as snakes and ladders, to engage the children in their learning. They will not be able to move forward on the board, unless they read the word.
We will also be applying our phonics learning, by writing sentences to describe what we did in the holidays. Children will practise using their tricky words in their sentence and will extend them by using ‘and’ ‘so’ ‘because’ or ‘but’.

In maths this week, we are focusing on doubling numbers. We will be looking at how we can double numbers using different games. The children will be starting the week by painting spots on a butterfly picture and folding the paper to print the spots on the other side. What can you notice? How many spots are there altogether?
We will also be playing dominos. The children will have to identify which domino has a double, and use it to start the game. Each time, we will be asking the children how they know it’s a double? How many spots altogether?

In the wider curriculum, we will be learning all about our environment. We will start the topic by discussing the different types of homes we live in. What similarities can we notice about what are friend’s homes are like? What differences can we notice? Then, we will move onto the wider environment. We will be asking the children about their knowledge of Coundon and mind mapping what they like about where they live. By the end of the week, we will be discussing the country we live in and what other countries the children will be familiar with.

Have a lovely week everyone!

Week Beginning 24th May
We would like to thank all the parents that handed in their ‘About My Family’ sheets, last week. It has been lovely to get to know all of the interesting facts about the children’s families and where they come from.
In phonics this week, we will be recapping the sounds ai, ee, ie, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, air, ure and er. Similar to the previous weeks, we are focusing on independent sentence writing. We will be thinking of different words that have the sounds in them and choosing a word/words to use in a sentence. We will be stretching the children’s learning, by using different ways to start their sentences e.g. first, then, finally. In turn, this will support their use of narrative in their writing.
In maths this week, we will be focusing on how we can use different shapes to make other shapes. We will start by looking at right-angled triangles and how we can create a square by putting two of them together. Then, we will be using small, square tiles to create long, thin rectangles, short, wide rectangles and larger squares. Finally, we will be looking at how we can create patterns using different shapes and we will be reading the story ‘Grandpa’s Quilt’ to support our learning.
In the wider curriculum, we will be continuing our theme of ‘All About Me’. This week, we will be focusing on how we grow and change. Children will think about when they were babies and what they are like now. What is different? How have we changed? To support the children’s learning, we are asking parents to send in any baby photographs they have of the children, to help them recognise the changes that has happened to them. These will be well looked after and returned at the end of the week!

We would like to wish everyone a lovely, relaxing half-term break, and look forward to seeing all the children back at school, refreshed, when we return!
