Week Beginning 10th May

The Reception team would like to say a huge thank you to all of the children and parents, for working so hard creating their instruments last Thursday. They looked absolutely fantastic and the children enjoyed playing them in their class bands, when they returned on Friday!

In phonics this week, we will be recapping the digraphs, ‘or’, ‘ur’, ‘ow’ and ‘oi’. We will be asking the children to think of words with these sounds in and use them in a sentence. We will be focusing on writing sentences independently, using our phonetical knowledge to write the words. We will be stretching some of the children, by asking them to use a conjunction in their sentences (and, because, or).

In maths this week, we will be focusing on addition. We will be revising what happens when we add one more to a number/objects. We will then move on to adding 2 or more to a number or objects, using ten frames to support this. We will be asking the children to identify how many objects we have to begin with, then add objects to this number – how many altogether? How many objects did we have to start with?

In the wider curriculum, we will be introducing the theme ‘Ourselves’. This week’s focus will be on what makes us different or similar to our friends. We will be discussing our appearance and focusing on using the vocabulary, differences and similarities. We will also be discussing what we like and dislike, and how this can also differ from our friends. The children will talk to their friends about what activities they enjoy and the activities they do not enjoy as much.

Monday 6th May Roman Shield Project

Good morning Year 4,
Today you will be working at home on a special art and design technology project.  You were given some information about this last week, along with any sheets that you might need. Please read through the PowerPoint and complete the tasks that are on it.

Task 1

Search the internet and books to view Roman Shield designs. Find out as much information as you can about their shape, size, materials used and why they were used.

Here are a few websites that might help:

http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/romans/shield.html

http://www.show.me.uk/editorial/1191-how-to-make-a-roman-shield

Task 2

On the sheet draw a design for the Roman shield you would like to make. Ensure your design is creative and individual.

Your design should be bright and colourful. Think about shapes and pattern. (Shields often include wings, eagles and bolts of lightning).

Think about what you will decorate your shield with. Could you use any of the following;

– Paint

– Paint and then sponge painting/printing on top

– Create and use a stencil

– Collage – with layers of paper

– Coloured pens/pencils

Task 3

Now it’s time to make your 3D shield! Try to use strong material such as card to protect yourself against those crazy Celts.

Follow the link below for some ideas on how to make the shield and there is even a really helpful video.

We look forward to seeing your wonderful shields in school ready for our Roman Day on Monday 10th May.

Week Beginning 3rd May 2021

We hope you all had a lovely Bank Holiday weekend, even with the horrible weather. This week is a short 3 day week in school as we are closed on Thursday for polling day. This is a home learning day and the children will be set an art task to complete on the day. We will be making something from Junk materials so please keep hold of some of your recycling materials for Thursday. We will be asking the children to think about what they want to make and to create a design of what they what to make before they make it. The children will be expected to bring back their design and their model to show and use on Friday.

Phonics – this week in Phonics we will be recapping on the phonemes oa, oo and ar. The children will be writing words and trying to use the words in a sentence. We are having a big push on sentence writing over the next few weeks so will be trying to write sentences as much as we can. Any extra practise at home would be fabulous – don’t forget to email us a picture so we can see how hard your child is working.

Maths – This week we are looking back at shape and pattern. The children will be trying to identify the different shapes and patterns and will be creating some of their own. By being able to see patterns the children will then be better at problem solving. WE will be doing some extra problem solving activities this week as this is a key skill we need more practise on.

Reading – This week we will be reading different stories this week and will be focusing on the structure on the stories. We will be trying to fill out a story mountain which will help us when trying to plan our own stories. When reading books with your child, see if they can tell you the structure of the story using the story mountain headings as seen below.

Have a wonderful week and we can’t wait to see your wonderful creations and designs on Friday.
