On Tuesday 21st May, a small group of Year 4 children were selected to take part in an orienteering event at Rough Close, Coventry. Other schools also took part in this activity to add an element of friendly competition in a fun environment. This event was an Olympic themed, scavenger hunt activity and was a great opportunity for the children to put into practice the skills they learnt earlier in the year during PE. A lovely afternoon was had by all.
This week Year 2 have been learning all about Romania. We have learnt many facts about the country. We also learnt some traditional songs and dances.
We designed and painted some wooden spoons, replicating Romanian folk art and crafts. We enjoyed tasting lots of different types of Romanian food such as Sarmale (cabbage rolls) and various pastries and other snacks. We also wrote a postcard, imagining we had been to Romania for our holidays. It was great fun learning how to say some basic Romanian phrases and how to count to 10. What a great week ????
Year 2 would also like to thank a parent from Year 3 (Alessia’s mum) who cooked the cabbage rolls for us! They were super tasty, and we really appreciate the experience of tasting homemade Romanian food. Thank you!
Wycinanki – intricate paper cut-outs – have been a popular folk craft in Poland since the 1900s. The decorative designs are mainly associated with two regions, Łowicz and Kurpie. The Kurpie cut-outs are made with a single sheet of paper and are thus totally symmetrical and only one colour.
Polish
The first known Polish pisanki date back to the 10th century. The pre-Christian tradition of dying eggs (originally red, the colour of blood) was to symbolize rebirth and renewal. Then, young women would decorate eggs and give them to young men.
Polish Dancing
We also learnt some Polish dance moves while dancing to the Polish traditional folk dance: Krakowiak.
Polish Food Tasting
During cultures week, we also tried some Polish food. This included:
Krokiety kasztelanskie (Croquettes with mushrooms and mozzarella cheese)
Pierogi with strawberries (fruit dumplings)
Polish bread
Kopernik Pierniki (polish gingerbread)
Slomka Ptysiowa (choux pastry product with sugar)
The children enjoyed this and especially enjoyed the gingerbread and the choux pastry.
As part of culture week Year 4 are learning about the country of India. So far this week we have created colourful art on the Indian elephant, learnt about and designed Mendi patterns, used henna to create beautiful artwork on our hands and wrote our names in Hindi.
The children had a fabulous time doing their sponsored wheels run. They cycled, scooted and pushed their way around 10 laps of the playground in the drizzly rain. We hope this encourages the children to get out on their bikes or scooters more and enjoy exercising to help they stay healthy. A big thank you to all of the parents for supplying bikes, scooters and pushchairs. The children were very excited to have them in school. Thank you for all of the sponsor money sent in so far. Please send in the money as soon as you can and we will let you know the total. Pass on our gratitude to all of the people who sponsored your children it is very much appreciated.
This week is culture week across the school. Early Years will be focusing on the country of Spain and its culture. The children will be involved in a wide variety of different activities across the week. They will be learning all about Spain and where in the world it is. They will be learning different Spanish greetings, how to count in Spanish as well as learning to flamenco dance. At the end of the week the children are encouraged to come into school dressed in traditional Spanish clothing or to wear the colours of the Spanish flag which are red and yellow. We are also hoping to end the week with a delicious Spanish treat of churros.
This week we will be assessing the children in their phonics to see if they have retained the sounds taught this half term and can segment and blend words containing those sounds to see if they are ready to move into the next Phonics group. Please continue to go over the sounds your child has learned. Although no books were set on line this week you can access all previous books set by clicking on Fred the frog on Oxford owl once your child has logged in. If you are looking for your own set of sound cards these can be purchased quite reasonably on Amazon.
We will also be assessing the children in Maths this week in a fun practical way to check their knowledge and understanding of all of the topics taught this year. We will then use this information to plan for the rest of the summer term so that we can plug any gaps the children may have. If you would like to try a range of Maths activities with your child, Topmarks maths has a wide variety of games covering a variety of topics which the children love to play.
Can we please remind you once again to send your child into school with a waterproof coat with a hood. Even if the forecast is saying it is going to be dry the weather can change easily and children are getting cold and wet. When doing our sponsored wheels run many children had non waterproof jackets such as denim jackets or did not have a jacket at all. It is better that your child has a jacket if they need it as it can stay on their peg rather than not having a jacket and not being able to join in the activities they want to join with. Remember unless it is raining heavily the children will be outside at lunchtime.
School breaks up for the half term holiday on Friday 24th May. Enjoy your break
In phonics, we will be assessing the children. They are making great progress. Keep up the regular reading at home and complete any online work set.
In maths, we will be learning about place value to 100.
This week is culture week and we have chosen to learn about Hong Kong. We will be doing map work to locate China and Hong Kong, learning about their foods, weather, clothes and transport. We will also be doing creative art activities and tasting foods. Please ensure you complete the permission letter about food tasting and return to your child’s class teacher.
On Friday we will be dressing up in the colours of the Hong Kong flag, which are red and white.
A massive congratulations to Billie (6HM) who is our first pupil at Coundon Primary School to complete our ‘100 Books to Read Before Leaving Year 6’ challenge. A reading superstar! Well done! ⭐????
Billie was presented with our ‘100 book challenge’ school trophy during the Head Teacher’s Awards assembly and received a keepsake trophy, certificate and a £10 ‘Love to Shop’ voucher for her fantastic achievement.
Billie’s photograph sits alongside the trophy in our school trophy cabinet to inspire others to follow in her footsteps.
In Nursery we have been learning the names and properties of 2d shapes. We have been using shapes to create pictures and models and have been on a shape walk.
Last week, Year 2 went to Coundon Wedge to look for signs of Spring. We had fun in the sun and saw lots of new flowers and some signs of new, baby animals!
